Taking fresh air around Kota Kinabalu

You may wonder if there are any nice places around Kota Kinabalu? Of course! Most  of the travelers visiting Sabah for the first time would most likely visit Kota Kinabalu or KK in short. befre you decide to take your tour package try to sight seeing kkcity first there are a number of places that you can do here as most of those places require a half day tour.

Lets start the ball rolling based on your free and easy stay in KK for first timers or even for those that may have been here before, this information could be a little extra helpful in your travels around Kota Kinabalu city.

1. Gaya Street

" Gaya street? Where is that is it nice? "

Let me tell you something about  Gaya Street, before the name given Gaya Street it  known as Bond Street during the British colonial era, and was established in 1902 and it one of the most old town in KK ! Cool right?! There are numerous shops which date back many years giving visitors that nostalgic feeling. All sorts of business can be found here from traditional barbers, grocery shops, goldsmiths, traditional coffee shops and the modern restaurants and cafes apart from the general convenience stores and banks here. There are many hotels & hostels found around here, For the tourist, the Sabah Tourism Board's office is housed in one of the old colonial buildings near Gaya Street.

You dont wanna miss this, "Sunday Market " always open  every Sunday which starts as early as 6 in the morning till about noon. People will prepare their things to sale around 4am-5am isn't that crazy?! Oh and yes, the parking will be closed because the marketeer will open their canopy at the parking lot. Loads of traders fill up the main street selling all sorts of wares, clothes, flowers, food, souvenirs and even pets. I would highly recommend visiting Gaya Street on a Sunday Morning. After exploring, give one of the old coffee shops a try, especially the coffee and dim sum or noodles.

Best Restaurant list so far ;
1. Kinabalu Cafe
2. Seng Fatt Restaurant
3. Fong Ip
4. Yee Fung Restaurant
                 5. Sin Kee Bak Kut Teh ( Non-Halal)

Atkinsons Tower

Atkinson's Clock Tower is Sabah's oldest standing structure and located at the back of Gaya Street in town. This beautiful clock tower was built back in 1905 and amazingly without any nails - only wood. Now, it stands at a proud 15 meters (50 Feet) high on the foot of the hill here.
This attraction is great for historical buffs and also photographic moments. You simply need to cross Jalan KK Bypass road to get to the Atkinsons Tower and there is no charge at all here. This is also part of the Heritage Walk in Kota Kinabalu trail.

FYI, It's near to our hostel, 1 minit to walk or less.

Signal Hill
Relaxing place at Kota Kinabalu city & this is the place to see it. A short 10-15 minute trek or walk up to Signal Hill from KK city will land you at the Signal hill Observatory Platform where you can see the entire view of KK city plus the islands of the T.A.R Marine Park in the distance.  This location is also a great place to visit in the day or in the evening.

The entrance to walk up here is from Padang Merdeka field
at the back of Gaya Street and
bring a bottle of water because you have to take the stairs.

FYI, It's near to our hostel as well.

So here's a lil bit about KKCity so far, to be continue.

A little bit of this and that about Kota Kinabalu

Jesselton that was the first name given before it changed to  Kota Kinabalu on 30 September 1967. Kota Kinablu  is the capital of the state of Sabah and It is also the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea.The world’s third-largest island (after Greenland and New Guinea), Borneo has roughly 287,000 square miles divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia and the tiny sultanate of Brunei. (KKCITY for short haha )

Sabah is famous all over the world for its rich cultural heritage and the festivals in the state constitute a significant part The Kadazan-Dusun is the largest ethnic category in Sabah and is predominantly wet rice and hill rice cultivators. Their language belongs to the Kadazan family and shares a common animistic belief system with various customs. Their ancient beliefs on the verity that everything has life - the rocks, trees, and rivers are all living things. They have souls and spirits that must be appeased from time to time through specific rituals. But in these modern times, some of the rituals are less performed accept during certain festivities. Along with over 80 indigenous languages and dialects, Sabahans speak Bahasa Malaysia as well as English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.

A number of local trade fairs are arranged periodically in the small towns of Sabah. The fairs are held in open air and are called Tamus. The trade fairs play an important commercial role as they are a strategy of marketing various products. The fairs are a somewhat spontaneous hustle of buying and selling various articles and products.
The natives also visit the fair for a possible barter of goods that include the types of farm produce, traditional wares, handicrafts, food items, and other materials and objects. Despite the commercial side of these local trade fairs, they can also be deemed as social and cultural events. Tamus showcase a truly rural yet an ethnic and colourful bazaar.
Sabah is famous all over the world for its rich cultural heritage and the festivals in the state constitute a significant part. Pesta Kaamatan is the most popular festival of Sabah. It is the harvest festival of Dusuns and Kadazans held in May. The festival features traditional dances. One of the most prominent dances that are featured includes one of the high priestesses bobohizan. The dance showcases the search for rice spirits in trance. The celebration is a rather ritualistic one that greets the harvesting of rice.
Unduk Ngadau is a beauty pageant held during the Kaamatan cultural event normally held in Sabah, Malaysia. The title comes from the ethnic word Runduk Tadau which means 'the girl crowned by sunlight'. Unduk Ngadau is one of the most recognizable cultural events in Sabah and the beauty pageant is unique to the state. The Unduk Ngadau beauty contest was started to pay respect to Huminodun, the sacrificed daughter of the Kadazandusun spirits Kinorohingan and Huminodun. It is believed that she was the one who taught the priestesses, known as locally as Bobohizans their ritual mantras which exist today.

The BUNK, Kota Kinabalu

We have 33 beds which are custom made, with a concept of an open space dorm so our guest can interact with each other during their stay here.

Location:-

We are located at the historically Gaya Street, one of the oldest street in Kota Kinabalu. The Bunk is built on one of the oldest shophouses around the street which was rebuilt after WWII, and today you can find a mixture of shops like old chinese provision shops, traditional medicine shop, choices of food shop, coffee houses, banks and offices.

On Sunday the whole street will be transformed as a weekly market or we here call it tamu. It is a lively atmosphere for both the local Sabahan and tourist both. A slow stroll down the street during this time is worth your stay here in Sabah. Take a chance to explore the culture, the food and especially meet the people here in Sabah.
